A Union City man apparently sustained injury Friday night when his car struck a utility pole at South Ury Street and East Reelfoot Avenue.
Joe Busby, 29, of 927 South Home St. was transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union City and later to a Memphis hospital following a crash that occurred about 10:15 p.m.
According to a Union City Police Department report, police arrived at the wreck scene to find a gold 1995 Nissan Maxima had struck a utility pole. The driver, identified as Busby, was lying beside the open driver’s door. He told police a cat ran out in front of him, he swerved to miss it and hit the pole.
An officer asked Busby about the use of alcohol or drugs and he allegedly told police he had been to the methadone clinic to take his medication.
He refused medical treatment at the scene and police started field sobriety tests, which Busby allegedly could not perform, police reported.
After emergency medical personnel left, Busby told police he needed to go to the hospital. Police transported him there, where he was admitted to the emergency room and later transported to Memphis.
A charge of driving under the influence is pending, according to the report.
