The Messenger has learned of the death of Martha Helen (Sublett) Tynes Scott, 85, of Bessemer, Ala., a former resident of the Rives area, who died Aug. 25, 2011, in Bessemer.
Graveside services were Aug. 27 at Lakewood Memorial Cemetery in the Garden of Peace in Jackson, Miss., with the Rev. Keith Tonkel officiating. Lakewood Memorial Funeral Home in Jackson was in charge of arrangements.
She was born Oct. 2, 1925, in the Pleasant Hill community near Rives, daughter of the late Stella Florence (Keel) and Edward Clifton “E.C.” Sublett Sr. She was the seventh of 11 children. She attended the former Rives and Woodland Mills schools and graduated from the former Rives High School in 1943. She also graduated from Draughan’s Business College in Memphis. She was a Methodist.
After marrying Albert L. Tynes April 15, 1946, she became a resident of Bogalusa, La., where the couple owned and operated Tynes Last Chance Service Station at Crossroad, Miss., for several years. She was widowed Aug. 15, 1952, and married Dr. Ralph T. Scott Aug. 13, 1959. They moved to Paris, Texas, and in 1965 to Jackson, Miss., where she remained until 2006. Her husband died in July 1996.
She was best known for her smile, her wit, her caring, her love of children and her passion for fishing.
She is survived by three children and their spouses, Al and Patty Tynes of Montevallo, Ala., Mike and Kay Tynes of Clinton, Miss., and Marthalane (Tynes) and Bill Loyacono of Hernando, Miss.; five grandchildren and their spouses, Al and Heather Tynes of Lansing, Mich., Stacy and Glen Truesdell of Vicksburg, Miss., Tanya Beaver of Hoover, Ala., and Katie and Andy Butler and Kristen and Teddy Dibiase, all of Madison, Miss.; eight great-grandchildren; her sister, Nell Garrett of Union City; two brothers and three sisters-in-law, David Sublett of McKenzie, Harry and Jane Sublett and Wanda Sublett, all of Union City, and Pauline Sublett of Rives; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Elizabeth Sublett, Vetta Garrigan and Louise Reeder; and four brothers, Carl Sublett, Edward Clifton Sublett Jr., Gerald Sublett and Kenneth Sublett.
