Allie Cantrell’s base hit in the sixth inning scored Kaycie Moultrie with the winning run to give the Lady Panthers’ softball team a 6-5 win over Hickman County and its second consecutive Lake County Invitational Tournament on Saturday in Tiptonville.
The dramatic win followed a pair of pool play wins as Martin knocked off South Fulton for the second time in a week, 5-1, and then easily handled the host Lady Falcons, 18-4.
Martin improves to 10-5 and will close out the season with Obion County entrants Hillcrest and Ridgemont this week.
Cantrell’s game-winning hit capped off a back-and-forth game between Martin and Hickman County, which entered the game with just one loss on the season. HC reached the title game with wins over Union City and Trenton.
Martin took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Moultrie led off with a hit and then scored on Bunny Jones’ two-out single to left field.
Three Lady Panther errors helped HC take a 3-1 lead in the third inning, but Tasharea Couch, Heidi Craddock, Jesse Shell and Ali Beverly each scored in the fourth to put Martin back in front, 5-3.
HC knotted the game at 5-all in the top of the sixth, starting the inning with four straight hits.
But, great defensive play by Couch, Craddock, Jones, Joy Hazlewood and Erin Bell — two HC runners were thrown out at third base and another was cut down at the plate — ended the Lady Falcons’ threat.
Moultrie then started Martin’s winning rally in the bottom half with a base hit and stolen base. Cantrell showed bunt on a pitch, allowing Moultrie to move to third and then singled to finish the job.
