McKenzie – The Second Annual Bethel Blast, a family-filled event for the community and for Bethel University students will be Saturday, Aug. 20, on the school’s McKenzie campus.
Bethel Blast will kick off the university’s fall 2011 semester and will be filled with some of last year’s favorites along with new activities and even some surprises, according to Myra Carlock, Director of Alumni Affairs and University Events.
Carlock said the event will begin at 4:30 p.m. in the courtyard of the McKenzie campus.
“There will be an artist’s colony featuring a number of local and regional artists. Also, small entertainment groups will be playing in Laughlin Gazebo throughout the afternoon, and we’re going to have BBQ and other food items that will be served by local vendors beginning at 5:30,” she said.
According to Carlock, some of the food vendors taking part include Big Daddy’s BBQ, Joe’s BBQ, HaliHannigan’s Cupcakery, Nan-Nan’s Fried Pies, Maggie Moo Ice Cream, McGee Catering and a competitive BBQ cooking team led by Mike Hodge.
“A showcase event will be a free concert at Wildcat Stadium by Renaissance at 7 p.m. This will be a concert that will suitable and enjoyable for guests of all ages,” Carlock said.
“It will be extra special as we will be celebrating the first birthday of Claws, Bethel’s Wildcat mascot. And after so many positive remarks about last year’s fireworks show, the concert will end with fireworks by Randy Bast of High Tech Special Effects.”
“Please pack the lawn chairs so you can sit back and enjoy your food and watch all the activities. Seating will be very limited, and we want everyone to be able to kick back and enjoy the evening.”
Parking will be available in the lots at Wildcat Stadium and adjacent to the Dickey Fine Arts Building as well as at the McKenzie Middle School and the McKenzie City Park.
Shuttles will run periodically throughout the evening to and from the off-campus locations.
