Hot enough for ya? Scorching temps expected to reach 100

Is it hot enough for you?
It’s a rhetorical question, and the answer is a resounding yes.
An excessive heat warning and excessive heat watch remain in effect for the Obion County area today, with the high temperature forecast to be near 100  amid sunny and hot conditions. Heat index values are forecast as high as 111.
Temperatures are expected to remain hot the rest of the week, although not as hot as today, according to the National Weather Service. Highs are forecast to be near 95 Thursday and Friday, with heat index values as high as 109 Thursday. Saturday’s high is forecast to be near 96.
Due to Tuesday’s excessive heat, the Union City Police Department offered local residents an alternative block party date for their observance of the National Night Out crime prevention event.
Two block parties were held during the evening despite the heat (see related photos, Page 9), but others have been scheduled for Aug. 27, police said.
With excessive heat sweeping several states this summer, the American Red Cross offers these tips for staying safe:
• Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of fluids, even if you do not feel thirsty. Avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol. Eat small meals and eat more often.
• Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing. Avoid dark colors because they absorb the sun’s rays.
• Slow down, stay indoors and avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day. Postpone outdoor games and activities.
• Take frequent breaks if you must work outdoors, and use a buddy system when working in excessive heat.
• Check on family, friends and neighbors who do not have air conditioning, who spend much of their time alone or who are more likely to be affected by the heat.
• Never leave children or pets alone in enclosed vehicles. Check on your animals frequently to ensure that they are not suffering from the heat.
