|Weakley County plans Memorial Day events |

The Martin American Legion, the Sons of the American Legion and the Auxiliary will be sponsoring a special event known as Field of Flags. The flags will be displayed beginning May 30 through June 12 on the UT Martin grounds at the corner of University Street and Skyhawk Parkway.
Placards reading “in honor of” or “in memory of” loved ones and friends will be placed on the flags as they are purchased. The flags can be purchased now for $25 each or flag sponsorships can be obtained for $50. Order forms can be picked up at the Martin American Legion or the Carl Perkins Center at 111 Oxford St. in Martin. Proceeds will be benefit the Carl Perkins Center.
A special program will be held on June 12 at the Martin American Legion on Central Street at 2 p.m. and flags purchased will be available to pick up then or may be picked up at the Center at a later time.

The Weakley County Courthouse will be observing a Memorial Day event at the Weakley County War Memorial on the courthouse front lawn in Dresden at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 30. Ron Cheatham, CSO, will give the welcome and the invocation will be given by George Crawford. Ronald Plunk will lead the Pledge of Allegiance and Olivia Wilson will provide special music following the prayer. Guest speaker will be Chad Brundige, SSG, an OIF Bronze Star medalist.
During the program, Odie Leggins and Terry Casteel of American Legion #55 will place a memorial wreath honoring the veterans.
Gene Foster of American Legion #94 will give a roll call of WWI, Randal Walker and Johnny Sams will give a roll call of WWII and Billy Laird of Rolling Thunder TN #6 will give the rolls calls for Korea, Vietnam and Iraq. Weakley County Sheriff’s Department officers will provide a gun salute, Sonny Todd will release doves and Wilson will provide more special music.
Boy Scouts Troop 40 will conduct the flag folding and raising ceremonies and Taps will be presented by Jackie Darnell of American Legion #94. Kieth Dublin of Palmersville Baptist Church will give the benediction.
