FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Junior catcher Chase Okey drove in a pair of runs to help the University of Tennessee at Martin baseball squad stay within striking distance against No. 23 Arkansas on Tuesday, but the Skyhawks fell 6-2 to the Razorbacks at Baum Stadium.
UT Martin — who put its first two men on base in the ninth inning but could not bring the tying run to the plate — is now 18-32 on the season.
Along with Okey’s two RBI, Jordan Owen led the Skyhawk offense at Arkansas.
The junior right fielder racked up a pair of hits and scored a run. Cory Stooksbury scored UT Martin’s other run while Matt Haynes also reached base three times for the Skyhawks.
Junior Willie Frederick pitched well in his first career start, allowing three runs on just five hits in 52⁄3 frames — falling just one out shy of tying his career-high in innings pitched.
After Arkansas hit a three-run home run in the first inning, Frederick settled down and retired 15 of the next 17 Razorbacks he faced, not allowing a runner past second base in that stretch.
The Skyhawks close out the regular season with a big home series this weekend against Austin Peay.
A pair of scenarios could see the UTM baseball team into the postseason.
In order to qualify for the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament, the UT Martin squad must take two games from the Governors or win one game and hope for a Southeast Missouri sweep over Eastern Illinois and Tennessee Tech to win at least one game against Murray State.
