Members of the Class of 2011 at Union City High School will mark the close of their local educational attainments Sunday evening at 8 at War Memorial Stadium on the UCHS campus. Guests are reminded that access to the graduation site will be closed shortly before that hour so that the graduates may process with the dignity and full attention to their accomplishments called for by the important ceremony.
Members of the UCHS Class of 2011 will enter to the strains of “Pomp and Circumstance” and their guests are invited to rise. Hannah Jackson, class president, will give the welcome and meditation and Brady Tidwell will give the salutatorian’s address. Matthew Keathley will then address the assembly as the class valedictorian.
UCHS principal Wesley Kennedy will present the class and note their future plans and Glenda Caudle, chairman of the Union City School Board, will give the graduates their diplomas. Union City Director of Schools Gary Houston will then provide the acceptance of the class as 2011 graduates and the class will sing the Alma Mater.
Junior class ushers for the graduation exercises include Devin Burnside, Andrew Easley, Andrew Warner, Grant Walton, Kaitlyn Wheeles, Ashlynn Chism, Anna Moore and Morgan Stone.
Top Ten students in the class, in order, are valedictorian Matthew Keathley, salutatorian Brady Tidwell, Britton Bugg, Chase Bowling, Taylor Edwards, Hannah Jackson, Trey Maddox, Erica Sturkie, Sarah Riley and Shenisha Huff.
Students who are graduating as members of Union City College Preparatory Magnet School are designated by the letter “M.” Those who are Beta Club members have the designation “B” and those who are Tennessee Scholars are indicated with a “T.”
To be a College Prepara-tory Magnet School graduate, students must have completed a total of nine Magnet School classes comprised of at least six Honors and three Advanced Placement classes and must earn a total of 26 credits. In addition, the students have to complete required summer assignments by the first day of school and students enrolled in AP courses are required to take the very competitive AP exam. In the event of inclement weather, graduation exercises will be moved indoors to Union City Civic Auditorium. Members of the Class of 2011 have received tickets to be dispensed to family and friends for both the outdoors and the indoors ceremonies and must be prepared to present these to gain entrance.
In keeping with the solemnity of the occasion, members of the class request that those attending refrain from applause and cheers until the graduates have all received their diplomas and been officially presented to the audience. So that each graduate may have the full attention of those attending, their families are asked to stand in respectful silence as the names of members of the Class of 2011 are called and they receive their diplomas. Guests are also asked to be in their seats on time and to refrain from leaving the ceremony until graduation exercises are over. So that those who are unable to access the bleachers and must use seats on the track may have a view of the proceedings, other guests are asked to take seats and avoid standing at the fence line.
“These are important requests being made by the class who want each student to have their full opportunity to shine before the community and will be disappointed if the actions of a few in the audience prevent the name, accomplishments and goals of another graduate from being fully heard. Our graduation guests over the past few years have been very cooperative and have noted that they are appreciative of the respect this affords each student,” says Houston.
