P. Daniel McConnell recently received his certificate of graduation from the James H. Quillen School of Medicine at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City. Those attending from Martin were his father, Stephen B. McConnell and wife, Alice; his grandmother, Mary McConnell; his aunt, Lenore Christiansen; his cousin, Benjamin; and his grandmother, Margrit McKinley of Hermitage.
Dr. McConnell is also the son of the late Charlotte McKinley McConnell. He is also the grandson of the late SSG USA/ret. William McKinley, and the late CW4 USA/ret. Russell V. McConnell.
McConnell is a 1995 graduate of Westview High School. He spent four years in the U.S. Army before attending the University of Tennessee at Martin as a pre-med student. His studies were interrupted by an 18-month tour in the Tennessee Air National Guard, where he became a helicopter pilot before returning to become a UTM graduate. His acceptance to the Quillen Medical School was delayed by the Guard’s assignment to a tour of duty in Afghanistan. Due to the crash of his helicopter in that country, McConnell lost his right arm and sustained other injuries. After many months of recuperation in Texas, he began his medical studies, culminating in his graduation. His residency will begin in Johnson City, concentrating in internal medicine.
