TRENTON, Ga. (AP) — In a rural Georgia county devastated by tornadoes last month, prom was more than just a teen rite of passage. For many, it helped restore some semblance of normalcy.
Prom was nearly canceled when the tornadoes hit Dade County on April 27, killing two people and razing 140 homes. But officials decided to push it back two weeks instead. Students who lost much in the storms — including their prom dresses — got some help so they could go.
A Facebook group called Rescue Prom gave donated dresses to girls like Delana Blevins and Marcella Lackey. Both lost their dresses when the twisters hit the shops where they had brought the gowns for alterations.
