A school bus crash Monday in Carlisle County, Ky., resulted in the death of a 6-year-old student returning from a school field trip.
The crash occurred about 1:40 p.m. while a Carlisle County school bus was traveling west on U.S. Highway 62 near Cunningham, Ky.
The Kentucky State Police reported the school bus was carrying 27 first- and second-grade students as they returned from a school trip near Paducah, Ky.
For unknown reasons, the bus left the right side of the roadway and traveled on the grass-covered shoulder. It then returned to the roadway and began to rotate counter-clockwise before rolling over into a steep embankment on the south side of U.S. Highway 62.
A 6-year-old boy was pronounced dead at the scene.
Sixteen children and an adult were transported to three area hospitals for various injuries, while the bus driver was airlifted to a hospital in Cape Girardeau, Mo., and an adult chaperone was airlifted to a Memphis hospital.
The KSP was assisted at the scene by emergency services from Carlisle, Ballard and McCracken counties.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation by the KSP.
