Obion County residents planning a career in medical laboratory technology only have a few weeks left to apply for Jackson State Community College’s program.
The deadline for applications to the program, which offers clinical labs at Baptist Memorial Hospital, is June 15 for the fall semester.
Jackson State provides prospective students with the general education courses and medical laboratory technician classes required for this degree program in Jackson.
During the second year of the two-year program, Baptist Memorial Hospital provides a site for the MLT students to acquire quality clinical laboratory experience.
The two-year MLT program at Jackson State enables students to receive an associate of applied science degree upon completion and qualifies its graduates to take national certification examinations and apply for state licensure as medical laboratory technicians.
The medical laboratory professional is a key member of today’s health care team.
Laboratory professionals have the skills to unlock important medical information that is critical to the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease.
Every day, nurses, physicians, and other medical workers depend on MLTs to perform tests on body fluids, interpret the results, and help provide a complete picture of a patient’s health.
Using modern biomedical equipment and complicated analysis, MLTs can detect the presence of cancer, identify infectious bacteria and viruses, and measure glucose, cholesterol, or drug levels in blood.
Without this precise and valuable information, medicine would simply become guesswork.
Laboratory professionals often work in hospitals, physicians’ offices, or private clinical laboratories, performing laboratory tests and monitoring the quality of their results.
There are positions available in the program beginning this fall for residents of Obion County.
For more information, contact Peter P. O’Brien, director of the medical laboratory technician program, Jackson State Community College, 2046 North Parkway, Jackson, Tenn., 38301, or by phone at (731) 425-2612 or by e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
