The Spring 2011 Beth Maloan Outstanding UT Martin Student Employee Award was presented to Mary Unger, Office of University Relations employee. She is a communications-public relations sequence major and has been employed for two years as the University Relations Public Relations Workship recipient.
Specifically, Unger, of Martin, maintains positive communications with university department and organization representatives and other news sources, including off-campus contacts.
She writes press releases on an extensive list of topics and proofs and edits the work of other staff members.
“She is diligent in fact checking, a critical component of our news releases that are sent to media outlets throughout the state and across the country,” said Rita Mitchell, university editor and Unger’s supervisor. “News is also time-sensitive, and Mary organizes her tasks and stays ahead of multiple deadlines.
“Mary has been an excellent role model for other college students as she balanced strong academics with student government, philanthropic and social activities.”
This award, given every fall and spring semester, is a memorial for Beth Maloan, longtime UT Martin director of budgeting and payroll, who during her years of service, was a strong advocate for student employment. Maloan had a vision that more positions would be developed on campus that would challenge students and make them significant contributors to the university’s mission.
Recipients of this award exemplify a strong work ethic and commitment to the university, and they receive a $1,000 cash award, an engraved plaque and a nameplate on the perpetual plaque in a place of honor in the Boling University Center.
Contributions to this scholarship award may be made through payroll deduction by employees of UT Martin or by sending a contribution to the Office of Development at UT Martin.
