Martin garbage rates slated for hike

On Monday night, Martin’s City Board agreed to accept a bid from Barker Brothers Waste to pick up curbside trash including brush and non-hazardous household items.
This has long been a free service offered by the city but landfill pressures pushed the board to seek other alternatives. The cost of the service will be $7.80, some of which will be absorbed by the city, but at this point no one knows how much.
This will be a mandatory service fee on top of the existing $18.84 Martin residents already pay for their green garbage cans to be emptied every week. The alderman voted to move forward with Barker Brothers for the additional pick-up with two aldermen, Bill Harrison and Randy Edwards, voting against this recommendation from the Public Works Committee.
