RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — With its gold gilt glittering again, the sword Civil War general Robert E. Lee wore at Appomattox is returning there.
The French-made sword that was at Lee’s side when he surrendered to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant has just been returned to the Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond from a conservator.
For nearly a century, the museum has had the sword among its collection.
The ornate weapon is among the museum’s top attractions.
The new home for the sword and its scabbard will be a museum under construction less than one mile from Appomattox Courthouse National Historical Park.
The Museum of the Confederacy plans to add two more museums to bring to the public selected portions of a Civil War collection it bills as the world’s largest.
