A Union City woman was hospitalized Friday after apparently being accidentally shot in the foot with a shotgun.
Amanda N. Speed, 25, of 703 North Division St. was injured in an incident that occurred at her home, according to a Union City Police Department report.
Police responded about 8:40 a.m. Friday to Ms. Speed’s residence to assist ambulance and fire department personnel, who indicated Ms. Speed had been accidentally shot in the foot. Police found a single-shot .410 shotgun lying on the bottom of a coffee table in the living room and secured the weapon.
Police reported the shotgun is sawed-off and does not have a trigger guard on it.
Robert Dean, who lives at the residence with Ms. Speed, told police Ms. Speed was sitting on the couch and he was lying down on a love seat. He said when he started to get up, the gun fell over and went off, striking Ms. Speed in the foot. He said the gun was upright, resting on either the love seat or the couch, according to the report.
Dean told police he picked up the gun prior to police arriving, took out the spent round and placed the gun on the bottom shelf of the coffee table.
Emergency personnel bandaged both of Ms. Speed’s feet due to her injuries and police reported they retrieved a pinky toe found lying on the carpet.
