“I’m proud of both these girls for getting this far,” Lady Charger tennis coach Chad Johnson said. “Cara
has improved a lot since last year and I hate that her senior season is over and that she didn’t make the regional tournament. “Melissa’s also gotten a lot better and I’m glad to have her for another year.”
Last year, both Burnham and Darroch competed near the middle of the depth chart at around the third or
fourth seed. The duo flip-flopped throughout this campaign as the No. 1 and 2 seeds and they could have easily entered the district tournament as singles. However, it was evident to both players that they were stronger as a duo.
“Because they played pretty well as doubles all year, there was never a question about what they were going to play in the tournament,” Johnson said “The decision was theirs.”
On Wednesday, the Lady Charger duo kept close in the first set. Early in the opening set, Burnham and Darroch trailed by a 2-1 margin and later 4-3 before the Halls’ doubles team pulled away.
“We got beat at the net today,” Johnson said. “I don’t think we’ve seen net play like that all year.
“They’re a really good doubles team and there’s no shame in losing to them.”
