It’s now or never for all local teams Posted: Friday, May 6, 2011 12:02 am The brackets are filled. It’s time for the postseason push of the local softball and baseball teams. Play begins this week in the District 14A, 13A and 13AA Tournaments in both baseball and softball. Greenfield is the host site for the 14A baseball tournament after Friday’s first-round satelite games. Meanwhile, Dresden has both the 13A baseball and softball tourneys at its place. First round contests for that event will take place at the higher seed. Every team will be opening the week with district tournament action as all of the remaining regular season games involving Weakley County teams — on Monday and Tuesday — fell victim to wet field conditions. The following is a summary of the opening round games for this postseason. BASEBALL The 13AA Tournament started on Wednesday as Westview hosted Gibson County in the play-in game. That game went final after The Press’ deadline. Details of that game will be in Tuesday’s edition of The Press. The winner of that contest goes on to play the host team Covington at 6 in the first-round of the double-elimination tournament this afternoon. After today’s play, semifinals of the winner’s bracket and first round of the loser’s bracket will take place at Covington and Dyersburg. The remainder of the tournament after that will be played at Union City’s Elam Stadium. In 13A, Gleason will either play at Bruceton or host West Carroll at McKenzie this afternoon. The Bulldogs’ status was up the air as the team finished in a tie with McKenzie for second in its division within the district. The result of Wednesday’s Big Sandy-McKenzie game was to determine each team’s fate, depending upon the amount of runs the Red Devils scored. For Dresden’s part, the Lions are to host Clarksburg at 5 Thursday afternoon. Greenfield knows its opponent as the 14A North Division champion is to host Bradford Friday at 5. SOFTBALL Westview will begin its postseason run on Thursday at 4 against the winner of Wednesday’s play-in game between Gibson County and Haywood. Regardless of the outcome, W’view will play again on Friday in either the winner’s or loser’s bracket. In single-A softball tournament action, Greenfield plays either Bradford in a 14A play-in game on Thursday. The Lady Yellowjackets will host that game, although it could be played at Union City if the field in G’field is not playable. Other Thursday Class A play has Gleason at McKenzie and Dresden hosting Bruceton in the 13A-play-in round. Only the top six teams in District 14A advance to the double-elimination portion of the league tournament, while just the top four from 13A move on a like event. wcp 5/5/11 |
