Westview’s top girls’ tandem is still in the hunt.
The Lady Charger duo of senior Cara Burnham and junior Melissa Darroch claimed a pair of victories on Saturday to advance to the semifinals of the District 14A-AA Individuals Tennis Tournament.
Burnham and Darroch, who have shared the No. 1 seeding for the W’view girls’ team throughout the 2011 campaign, will play Halls’ Shelby Hurt and Molly Houston — the event’s overall second seed — either today or Wednesday (weather permitting) at 4 p.m.
The winner of that match will advance to both the 14A-AA championship round — on the same day as the semis — and the Region 7A-AA Individual Tournament semifinals.
The winner and runner-up from the 14A-AA Tournament takes on the like finishers from District 13A-AA. The 13A-AA Tournament is scheduled for this weekend at Bethel University.
“They worked very hard to get to this point,” Westview tennis coach Chad Johnson said of his top two girls’ players. “They’ve got their sights set on winning the district tournament and I know they’re hungry for it.”
Johnson said the decision to use the No. 1 and No. 2 Lady Charger singles players as a duo was made midway through the season.
“They play pretty well together,” Johnson said. “They’ve lost a few matches, but they were close.”
Union City’s Anna Moore and Tara Elam face Covington’s Conner Guerrant and Molly Griffin in the other 14A-AA semifinal whenver play resumes.
In the other girls’ match involving Westview girls on Saturday, Moore and Elam knocked out Chantia Brown and Ashley Gross 8-2 in the first round.
Girls’ singles action had Lady Chargers Laura Ferrer and Sydney Gilliam falling in play-in round action to the respective competition of Amy Davis (Haywood) and Sarah Littlejohn (Crockett County). Ferrer lost 8-2, while Gilliam was felled 8-1.
On the boys’ side, Westview senior Tanner Spencer played his final match on Saturday morning. Spencer lost 8-3 to Trenton’s Drew Butler.
W’view’s other male player Ethan Plunk was downed 8-6 in a close contest by Haywood’s Nathan Peace. Peace is one of the final four boys’ players remaining at the district tourney.
Peace is to take on Dyersburg’s Rick Van Sant this afternoon in semifinal play, while Ripley’s James Vaughn does battle with Halls’ Mason Joyner in the other final four match-up.
In the girls’ singles draw, Trenton’s Hallie Norman battles Dyersburg’s Elizabeth Finley in one semifinal, while Haywood’s Marcy Sharp takes on Covington’s Rhett Watson in the other.
