UT Martin is in OVC field as usual

The UT Martin softball team clinched a spot in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament, its third consecutive tournament berth and ninth in the past 10 years under the direction of head coach Donley Canary over the weekend.
The Skyhawks clinched a spot in the tournament on Saturday when they defeated SIU Edwardsville in the second game of a doubleheader.
UTM won the game 5-3, but lost the opener 10-2.
On Sunday, UTM procured the series victory with a 2-1 win over SIU-E’ville.
The Skyhawks were scheduled to host Middle Tennessee State University this afternoon at Bettye Giles Field in Skyhawk Park.
However, that doubleheader has been canceled.
UTM 2, SIU-E 1
Freshman Stephanie Nidiffer and sophomore Leah Taylor led UT Martin to the victory to claim the series win.
Nidiffer hit a solo home run in the top of the second inning, while Taylor hit a solo homer in the top of the sixth.
Freshman Amanda Brandenburg picked up her 11th win of the season in the circle. The Camden native pitched seven innings and gave up six hits, four walks and one run. She struck out four en route to her fifth consecutive victory.
SIU-E 10-3, UTM 2-5
Jenny Bain smacked two doubles and drove in three of the Skyhawks’ five runs in the second game.
All totaled, Bain and Taylor combined for four of the Skyhawks’ 10 hits in the game.
Brandenburg pitched seven innings.
She scattered six hits and struck out five.
In the first game, SIU Edwardsville scored five runs in the bottom of the second inning and never looked back.
SIU-E’ville had four players with two hits each.
UT Martin scored one run in the first inning and one run in the second inning. The Skyhawks had five hits in the game. Taylor, Brandenburg, Chelsea Cary, Nidiffer and Megan Latimer had one hit each in the game.
