Skyhawk ladies team have ‘post’ to build
The UT Martin women have added a post to its 2011-12 building.
Head coach Kevin McMillan announced recently that he has signed junior college transfer Danielle Hellickson to a scholarship for the upcoming season.
Hellickson will transfer from Illinois Valley Community College to UTM.
As a sophomore at IVCC, she averaged 13.6 points, 6.05 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 1.20 blocks per game and shoots 45 percent from the field and 30 percent from 3-point range.
“Danielle is a versatile post who can play the 3, 4 or 5 positions for us,” McMillan said. “She is a great passer and at 6-1 can cause match-up problems all over the floor. She played point some at Illinois Valley as well as post showing her versatility.”
“A big key will be how she recovers from her knee surgery but if she pushes herself and does it right she will be an impact player for us,” McMillan said.
Hellickson played at both Tower Grove Christian School (2004-06) and Incarnate Word Academy (2006-08). She was a two-year starter and a two-time all-conference selection at Tower Grove.
She averaged 3.9 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 0.5 apg  and 1.5 spg as a junior at Incarnate Word.
As a senior, Hellickson averaged 8.1 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 2.1 apg and 1.8 spg.
She was named a Top-Missouri Senior by MOSports.com in 2008. She helped the Red Knights to a 55-6 record in her two seasons.
Incarnate Word was ranked No. 23 in the Sports Illustrated 2006-07 Preseason High School Girls’ Basketball Top-25 Poll.
UT Martin finished the 2011 season with a 21-12 overall record, finished second in the Ohio Valley Conference standings (14-4), won the OVC Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history.
