CHATTANOOGA (AP) — Seven years after beginning a year-round class schedule at one elementary school, Hamilton County schools are dropping the idea.
School officials say neither parents nor teachers completely bought into the experiment at Hardy Elementary, according to The Chattanooga Times Free Press.
The school will return to an August-to-May class schedule this summer.
When the year-round schedule was adopted for the 2004-05 school year, educators hoped it would produce better results than the traditional schedule under which students sometimes lose ground during the summer break.
The class schedule was six weeks on, three weeks off through the entire year.
In 2010, Hardy failed for the first time to achieve its academic goals.
A poll of teachers showed half wanted to end year-round schooling.
