About 10 Goodyear associates at the Union City plant spent their last day on the job Saturday before transferring to Goodyear’s plants in Feyetteville, N.C., and Gadsden, Ala.
A source within the plant confirmed that the first round of associate transfers has begun at the local Goodyear plant.
Associates are being given the option to transfer to other North American Goodyear plants as the company shuts down the local plant.
The Fayetteville and Gadsden Goodyear plants produce consumer tires.
Another group of associates is scheduled to transfer to Goodyear’s plant in Danville, Va., later this month. That plant produces aircraft tires and medium radial truck tires.
A two-day expo was held in the local Goodyear plant last week to provide plant workers with information about transfer options.
The Union City Goodyear plant has about 1,850 hourly associates still working there, according to the source.
In a related development, the local plant’s human resource department is now recruiting summer workers.
Union City’s Goodyear plant will take on adult children of plant associates to work at the plant during he summer, according to Traci Watson in the human resources department at the plant.
“This is our summer vacation relief program, which we’ve been doing for years,” Ms. Watson told The Messenger today.
She explained the plant uses dependents of Goodyear associates, who are 18 years old and older, to fill in for workers who take vacation time during the summer months.
