UT Martin got its best-ever finish at the OVC Golf Championship for the “second” time.
With Wednesday’s final round canceled due to the heavy rain at GreyStone Golf Club in Dickson Dickson, Jacksonville State was declared the OVC champion and UTM the runner-up.
UTM also finished second in the OVC in 1995.
Jacksonville State, who also won OVC Championships in 2004 and 2007, had a commanding 18-stroke lead after round two of the championship. The Gamecocks had already established OVC Championship records for team single round (280, 8-under) and team two round scores (561, 15-under) when play was halted.
The Gamecocks (15-under) paced the field by 18 shots over UT Martin (3-over), who equaled its highest finish at the OVC Championship with a second place overall finish.
Defending champion Murray State finished third (4-over) and was followed by Eastern Kentucky (6-over), Austin Peay (9-over), Tennessee Tech (18-over), Tennessee State (18-over), Eastern Illinois (20-over) and Morehead State (23-over).
The All-Tournament Team, which is comprised of the top five finishers (with ties), included UT Martin’s John Michael Sisinni.
Sisinni finished in a tie for fifth with a two-round total of 141 (-3) after rounds of 72-69. Sisinni became the first UT Martin player to finish in the top five and make the All-Tournament squad since Charles Willoughby achieved the feat in 2000. Skyhawk Jonathan Martin also finished in the Top 10 after a two-round score of 142 (two strokes under par for the event).
