The community is invited to a “Special” event Saturday morning.
The annual Obion County Special Olympics will be staged starting at 10 a.m. on the Union City High School campus.
There is no admission charge and the public is invited to attend to cheer for the competitors.
Special Olympics offers year-round sports training and competition for children and adults who have physical or developmental disabilities.
Sponsored by the Union City Kiwanis Club, the Obion County games will kick off Saturday morning with opening ceremonies that traditionally include the singing of the national anthem by a competitor, the recitation of the Special Olympics oath and an opening torch lap around the track. Participants will then compete in a variety of track and field events, including walks and runs of various distances, standing long jump and softball throw, as well as bocce ball.
Many volunteers will be on hand to assist with the county games, among them Kiwanis Club members and UCHS students from various clubs or athletic teams.
