A Martin man was charged with two drug-related offenses after the police and fire departments responded Tuesday night to a complaint of smoke coming from a Union City apartment.
Ali Mohmad Alhabib, 21, of University Courts, Apt. A-17, Martin, was arrested at 8:25 p.m. at 1331 Hillsboro St., Apt. F-16, Union City, and charged with simple possession of a Schedule VI controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
According to a Union City Police Department report, police responded to the Hillsboro Street apartments with the Union City Fire Department shortly before 8 p.m. in reference to smoke coming from one of the apartments. Police arrived at Apt. F-16 and went through the apartment with firefighters to locate the smoke.
A police officer reported he smelled a strong odor he recognized to be marijuana and observed on the floor a metal grinder commonly used for marijuana. The apartment tenant and Alhabib gave police consent to search and police found about 5.8 grams of a substance believed to be marijuana, according to the report, which indicated police also retrieved the grinder.
