Weakley County AARP holds chapter meeting

Weakley County AARP Chapter #3392 met on March 16 in the fellowship hall of the First United Methodist Church in Martin.
Visitors were Mrs. Naomi McMorries, Bob Smith, who was our speaker, and Marcel Martin, a Vietnam veteran who accompanied Mr. Smith.
Hostesses were Mrs. Mary Kate Bell and Mrs. Hycinth Smith.
Chapter President Mary Elizabeth Bell opened the meeting with a hearty welcome and she read “Friends Understand.”
In his Legislative Report, Second Vice President Woodrow Collier, spoke briefly about the situation at the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company in Union City.
He then introduced Bob Smith, who is a Tennessee Colonel. Col. Smith spoke about the history of this area and how black people and white people got along with each other. He spoke about some of his experiences and sang “The Haven Of Rest” as his testimony. Col. Smith is a contributing writer to the Weakley County Press during Black History Month.
Our next chapter meeting is scheduled for April 20 at 9:30 a.m. for refreshments and fellowship. The meeting will begin at 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Martin. Mrs. Jean Bradberry and Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Bell volunteered to be the hostesses. Scheduled speaker will be Nick Dunagan, former Chancellor of the University of Tennessee at Martin who will tell about his recent trip to Jerusalem.
