A Union City woman reported a telephone scam to police Tuesday.
The 65-year-old victim told police an unknown person called her home and claimed her oldest grandson had been in a car accident in Canada, according to a Union City Police Department report.
The caller alleged the grandson had sustained a broken nose, gotten arrested for drunken driving and been jailed and asked the local woman for $3,000 by Western Union in order to get him out of jail. The caller told her to send the money to a Spain address and to get a money order with either cash or a debit card.
According to the report, the local woman told police she did not believe the caller and hung up.
