DETROIT (AP) — Detroit artist Tyree Guyton is known for dotting his home city’s sometimes bleak exterior with colorful polka dots.
Now, a quarter-century after creating his signature outdoor installation, the Heidelberg Project, Guyton again is using the Motor City as his canvas.
This time, instead of applying a paint brush to a series of vacant homes, he’s focusing on something much smaller: shoes.
Lots of shoes.
Guyton and an army of volunteers have been painting the footwear and populating a city block with it.
The project is being called “Street Folk.” It’ was unveiled on Thursday just outside of downtown.
Guyton says “the shoes are a reflection of people, all going in different directions and yet they are all in the streets.”
