The Fortnightly Club met on Saturday in the home of Barbara Trentham with Carolyn James and Maggie Byars as co-hostesses. A delicious dessert plate was served to 19 members and three guests.
Our speakers for the afternoon were Glenda Caudle, Special Features Editor at the Union City Daily Messenger and Larry Snider, Director of Marketing and Communications to discuss Discovery Park of America in Union City.
Discovery Park of America is a multi-million dollar education, entertainment and tourism complex being constructed in Union City with funding underwritten by the Kirkland Family Foundation. The complex will encompass 50 acres accessible to Hwy. 51 and Interstate 69. Work on the project will begin in April and will be completed in 2013.
Caudle spoke about the idea for the project from the Kirklands and the volunteer efforts by many people in Obion County and West Tennessee including faculty from UTM, to bring the plans to reality.
She is also very involved in the public awareness aspect of this project by her writings for the Union City Messenger.
Snider presented a slide show of the Discovery Park site and the various projects planned for each area. There were detailed sketches of the park’s Discovery Center with visualizations of the many exhibits and the exciting way they will be presented.
There will be special emphasis on education with 60,000 feet of exhibit space to offer many opportunities for children, youth and adults to expand their knowledge in many ways. There are plans for walkways, waterways, train exhibits, a working gristmill, botanical gardens and many other features overlooked by the glass tower of Discovery Center.
Following the program. President Jerri Conley, called the meeting to order and led the members in reciting the Collect. Roll was called and minutes of the last meeting were read and approved as written.
There was no old business. New business was concern with filling recent vacancies in membership.
Ruby Brundige and Evelyn Culvahouse were designated Honorary Members.
Members present other than those already mentioned were: Vicky Ayers, Carolyn Brown, Frances Cates, Marion Fields, Carol Gibson, Carolyn Gresham, Edna Harris, Martha Lee Lacy, Dottie Smith, Nelle Sparks, Sandra Vincent, Linda Wade, Melba Wash and Pat Watkins.
