The Messenger, April 4, 2011

Gov. Ned Ray McWherter, 80, whose influence as a Democratic  Speaker of the House of Representatives and as the 46th governor of the Volunteer State (1987-95) extended far beyond its borders and compelled even presidents to heed his advice, died about 2 p.m. April 4, 2011, at Centennial Hospital in Nashville, according to a spokesman for his office.
McWherter was born in Palmersville and had made his home in Dresden since he left the governor’s office. He is the owner of several nursing homes and a beer distributorship and has long been active in Democratic political circles. In 2008, his son, Jackson businessman Mike McWherter, sought to follow his father into the Governor’s mansion in Nashville but was unsuccessful in that attempt. McWherter is also the father of Linda Ramsey, a professor at the University of Tennessee at Martin.
Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced on this web site and in Tuesday’s Messenger.
