13th annual African-American Leadership Conference slated

“Challenges and Opportunities” is the theme of the 13th annual African-American Leadership Conference, slated 8:30 a.m.-1:45 p.m., April 19, at the West Tennessee Research and Education Center, in Jackson.
This conference is made possible by the University of Tennessee at Martin WestStar Leadership Program, in partnership with the City of Brownsville Access & Diversity Initiatives, Walmart, First South Bank, Hardin County Government, City of Covington, West Tennessee Healthcare and the UT Institute for Public Service.
This year’s keynote speaker is Mearl Purvis, FOX13 News, Memphis. Purvis has won five regional Emmy Awards, the Edward R. Murrow Award, the George Foster Peabody Award and the J.C. Penney Missouri Award. Prior to her career in Memphis, she reported and anchored in Charlotte, N.C.; Hartford, Conn.; Nashville; and Jackson, Miss.
Registration and a continental breakfast are slated from 8:30-9 a.m. UT Martin Chancellor Tom Rakes and Charley Deal, UT Martin WestStar executive director, will speak from 9-9:15 a.m., followed by Purvis from 9:15-10 a.m. “All in the Family” is the topic from 10-10:30 a.m., presented by Dr. Cyronose Spicer, Ripley New Beginnings Christian Center CEO/senior pastor and WestStar Class of 2010 alumnus. There will be free blood pressure and heart assessments at 10:30 a.m. An education panel with students from area schools will begin at 10:45 a.m. Youlanda Jones-Wilcox, UT Martin Ripley Center director and WestStar Class of 2005 alumna, will be panel moderator.
Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m., followed by a presentation at 12:15 p.m., “Connecting With Your Community,” by Cedric Deadmon, Southwest Tennessee Development District REDI regional college access coordinator. At 12:45 p.m., “Finance and the African American” will be presented by Chester Sharpe, Bancorp South, Jackson, assistant vice president. The final presentation, “Healthcare,” will be presented at 1:15 p.m. by Dr. Nanette Wells-Brooks, of Jackson. The day will end with award presentations, remarks and door prizes at 1:45 p.m.
