March activities in the Lighthouse Community began with a birthday celebration of children’s book author Dr. Seuss. Dr. Seuss was born Theodor Seuss Geisel on March 2, 1904. He published 44 children’s books written under the pen name Dr. Seuss. His most celebrated books include “Green Eggs and Ham,” “The Cat in the Hat” and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” In his honor, I read “The Lorax.”
It is a story about a hairy creature that is trying to save the trees of the forest that it lives in. This book is very entertaining. The residents enjoyed the story. Popcorn and juice were also served during the reading.
St. Patrick’s Day was also a big deal for us in the community. We celebrate from March 14-17. One activity we participated in was “Find St. Patrick’s Gold Treasure.” I balled up yellow construction paper and hid the pieces in various areas and let the group search for the “treasure.” Ms. Annie Merritt found the most treasure. She found 50 pieces! Runner up was Ms. Geneva Vickers. She found 34. Snacks were served the hunt. It was all in good fun!
We also had a cooking class. We made cookies with leprechaun green icing. Each resident was given cookies. They spread icing on them and topped them with green sprinkles. I think the part we enjoyed the most was eating our creation!
We ended our celebration with a St. Patrick’s Day party. The dining room was decorated for the event. Food served at the party included finger food sandwiches, chips and St. Patrick’s Day decorated cupcakes. Green Hawaiian Punch was the beverage we served. Everyone had a blast!
Activities for this month will end with a March birthday party. We celebrated five birthdays in the community this month. Ms. Aleetha Beechum turned 81 on March 1, Mrs. Ellen Schleich turned 92 on March 3, Ms. Josephine Brundige turned 94 on March 4 and Ms. Clara Rogers turned 84 on March 22.
Happy birthday, ladies! Our party will be held on March 25.
