Dow L. Smith, 86, of Marion, Ill., a former resident of Union City, died 10:35 a.m. March 25, 2011, at Parkway Estates in Marion.
Services were 1 p.m. Monday at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home in Marion, with the Rev. Ivan Ryan officiating. Burial followed in Robinson Cemetery in Ozark, Ill., with military rites performed graveside by the Marion Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion posts and with assistance from the Illinois National Guard.
Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home in Illinois was in charge of arrangements.
He was born in New Burnside, Ill., April 24, 1924, son of the late William Fred and Myrtle (Tanner) Smith. He was retired from the U.S. Navy, having served during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict. He was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include two daughters and his son-in-law, Kellie and Michael Kays of Carmel, Ind., and Jodie L. Smith of Jacksonville, Fla.; two grandchildren, Kristen Kays and Alexander Kays, both of Carmel; his brother and sister-in-law, Dan and Imogene Smith of Medford, Ore.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Luther Smith, Walter Smith, Frank Smith and Herman Smith.
