Remember When? Petty, True, Elam carry big sticks as Rebs rout Kenton

March 27 — Union City High School product Terry Hornsby allowed just five hits to gain his second win of the campaign as the UT Martin baseball team bested Wright State 8-3. Greg Hunter doubled for the Pacers, while Kevin Hubbard had two hits during the victory.
March 28 — Obion Central shut out Kenton 22-0 on the baseball diamond. Richard Petty was a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI, while Rebel teammates Mike True and Lynn Elam chased home the same number of runs. True homered and doubled. Elam knocked three singles. OC’s Jeff Chappell claimed the mound triumph. Kenton got just three hits.

March 25 — Obion Central’s Class 3A State Tournament run ended at the feet of the defending champions. The Rebels were ousted in the semifinals of the state tournament, falling 106-80 to Science Hill. The defeated finished OC’s season — its last as a triple-A school — with a mark of 34-3. Denver Whitby poured in 37 points for the Rebels. Shannon Huff and Matt Barnett each totaled 13.
March 27 — Union City High School’s Stanley Caldwell was named to the Associated Press All-State first team. Caldwell averaged 22 points and 13 rebounds per contest during the Twisters’ recently-completed 29-4 campaign. Caldwell — a junior — was already reportedly heavily recruited by numerous colleges.

March 26 — Obion Central edged Dyer County 8-7 on the baseball diamond. Zach Roberts, tripled, singled and chased in a trio for the Rebels. Meanwhile, Justin Whipple smacked a double and also singled. Ben Cope also was key for the Rebels with a two-run double.
March 27 — South Fulton routed Union City 14-4 on the softball diamond. Ashley Owens was 3-for-4 with five RBI and a triple, while Sarah Hill drove in three during a perfect 3-for-3 outing. Winning pitcher Jennifer McDaniel struck out five. Lady Twister Tamisha Slayton was saddled with the mound defeat. Julie McKnight was 2-for-3 with a double for UC. Diniece Fountain also had two hits for Union City.

March 24 — The South Fulton softball team bested Lake County 17-3. Sara Reams was 3-for-4 with a trio of ribbies, while Molly Ledbetter smashed a two-run home run. Brittany Johnson also contributed greatly for the Devilettes with a 2-for-3 outing and a double. Winning pitcher Chelsea Cox struck out seven.
March 27 — Obion Central spanked Hayti (Mo.) 11-1 on the baseball diamond. Winning pitcher Zach Cloar drove in two runs. Ian McGrew was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI. McGrew also scored twice, as did Andrew Heuck and Josh Pollock.

March 24 — The Union City softball team claimed the first triumph of Cristina Grimm’s tenure as head coach. The Lady Twisters bested Dresden 8-2. Victorious pitcher Karly Hollis struck out 10, while Hannah Jackson singled and Kaitlyn Wheeles had three safeties for Union City.
March 25 — The Obion Central baseball team broke out against Dresden in the opening evening of the St. Jude Classic. The Rebels routed Dresden 18-5. Colton Woodward knocked a three-run home run that left Thompson Field. Ethan Davis finished 3-for-4 with five RBI, while Blake Walton was 3-for-3 with five runs scored. Dustin Smyth also was notable for Central with a 3-for-5 outing that included three runs and a pair of ribbies. Winning pitcher Brady York tossed three innings in the game that was called early due to the mercy rule and struck out six.
