Essentially, it was a case of deja vu for the Union City girls’ tennis team.
The Lady Twisters came so close to knocking off the highly-regarded Greenfield girls but, ultimately, fell 4-3 for the second time in the span of a week.
The top doubles match was what ultimately decided the match, according to new UC tennis coach Elizabeth Mooney.
In that particular pairing, Lady Twisters Anna Moore and Gracie Frankum fell by an 8-4 margin to the Lady Yellowjacket tandem of Emily Allen and Kaylee Kesterson.
“The girls were nervous going into this match and it showed,” Mooney said of Monday’s action. “It was a tough loss, but I am very proud of my girls.”
Meanwhile, Tara Elam and Laura Reed Smith teamed to prevail in the other duos match, besting Taylor Hatcher and Kendal Cook 8-6.
In singles’ play, Moore — the top Lady Twister — edged Allen 9-8 (7-4 in the tiebreaker). Moore trailed 3-0, but came back for the triumph.
Union City’s No. 5 seed Jenna Miller recorded the other singles win for the locals, topping Lauren Rush 8-6.
Other solo action at the local courts had Greenfield’s Taylor Hatch-er as an 8-5 victor over Tara Elam in the battle of second seeds, while Kendal Cook edged Gracie Frankum 8-6.
Kesterson — the No. 4 seeded Lady Yellowjacket — blanked Union City’s Laura Reed Smith 8-0.
The Union City tennis team returns to action this afternoon at home against Westview.
