The Messenger has learned of the death of Melvin Johnny Propes, 65, of Rosie, Ark., who died March 8, 2011, at White River Medical Center in Batesville, Ark. He had been a longtime resident of this area.
A memorial service was held in Campbell Station, Ark., at the community center March 19.
He was born June 12, 1945, in Harrisburg, Ark., son of the late Melvin “Bee” and Mary Propes. He was the widower of Jean Propes.
Survivors include his wife, Violet Propes; three sons, Eric Pinion of Dresden, Freddie Bates Jr. of Concord, Ark., and Luke Fountain of Cabot, Ark.; two daughters, Mary D. Robertson of Oil Trough, Ark., and Danielle Patterson of Sulphur Rock, Ark.; two brothers, Porter Smith of Union City and Donald Propes of South Fulton; two sisters, Ailene Spurlock of Martin and Byrd Evans of Union City; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and 11 nieces and eight nephews.
He was also preceded in death by two daughters, Deniece Brechen and Angel Cartwright; and two brothers, Franklin Smith and Reuben Smith.
