A Union City police officer had to put down two dogs on Friday after a pit bull attacked and injured a cocker spaniel.
According to a police report, Tommy Eugene Wallace Jr. of 1125 Woodlawn Place, Union City, called police about a pit bull attacking his cocker spaniel. The pit bull belonged to his mother, Barbara Roberts, who left the pit bull at his home in the fenced back yard with the cocker spaniel.
Wallace said, when he found them, the two dogs were fighting. He said he tried to break up the fight but the pit bull came after him. Wallace said he threw bricks over the fence at the pit bull and hit it with a 2-by-4 to get it away from his dog.
The officer reported the cocker spaniel was lying next to the fence with what appeared to be half its face missing. It was still breathing, so the officer shot the dog, killing it instantly.
When contacted, Ms. Roberts said she had just gotten the pit bull on Friday and asked the officer to put it down, saying if the dog could do that to another dog, then it could also hurt a child. After determining it would be difficult to safely catch the dog, the officer shot the pit bull.
Wallace was to dispose of both animals.
