BREAKING NEWS: Duke downs UT Martin in the first round of the NCAA Women’s Tournament

UT Martin was defeated 90-45 by Duke in its first-ever NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament game.

The Skyhawk women trailed by a 41-31 margin at halftime.

The No. 2 seeded Duke women opened the second half with a 13-2 run in the first four minutes to pull away and gain a more comfortable cushion.

Heather Butler paced the UT Martin women, who were outrebounded 36-25 and forced into 22 turnovers, on Saturday, with 15 points. Fellow freshman Jasmine Newsome had nine for the Skyhawk women.

The game was the final in a UTM jersey for lone senior Alecia Weatherly.

In other news from the NCAA Women’s Tournament, Obion Central product Chassidy Fussell and her Texas teammates also felt the sting of defeat on the first day.

The Longhorn women were edged 68-66 by Marquette in Knoxville. Fussell had 11 points on 5-of-13 shooting. Marquette will play Tennessee in the second round.
