LOS ANGELES (AP) — Johnny Depp as animated chameleon Sheriff “Rango” topped the international box office this past weekend with an impressive $22 million in 38 territories.
After debuting in second place the previous weekend behind Oscar-fueled “The King’s Speech,” the animated family film moved into first and has $120.4 million in global box office revenue to date. American-made animated family films have gained broad acceptance overseas, with “Gnomeo and Juliet” and “Tangled” also finding favor with children and families on a global scale.
The devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan, the world’s second-largest movie market behind North America, resulted in more than a 40 percent drop in box office revenues from the region, according to global media measurement company Rentrak Corp. Long-term impact of the quake on the international marketplace could also be significant.
Here are the top 10 movies at international theaters last weekend, followed by international gross for the weekend (excluding North America), number of theater locations, number of territories, worldwide gross to date (including North America), and number of weeks in release as compiled Wednesday by Rentrak and provided by Hollywood.com:
