Willie Dee Roberts, 88, of Somerset, Ky., formerly of Fulton, died March 15, 2011, at the Paul E. Patton Eastern Kentucky Veterans Center in Hazard.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Strong Funeral Home in Hickman, Ky., with the Revs. Henry Callison and Johnny Daulton officiating. Burial will follow in Cayce (Ky.) United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Visitation will be Friday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
He was born May 9, 1922, in Tiptonville, son of the late Albert and Queenie (Baker) Roberts. He married the former Rosie Madding at Hickman March 21, 1947. She preceded him in death Oct. 2, 1977.
He was the owner of Dee Roberts Plumbing & Heating in Fulton for over 50 years. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served during World War II and the Korean War and, on April 18, 2008, at the Veterans Center in Eastern Kentucky, he was presented numerous medals which were earned during his service from 1942 until 1948. These included, Korean Service Medal, Navy Occupation Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Asia-Pacific Campaign Medal, American Campaign Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a Jehovah’s Witness.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Joe C. and P.J. Roberts of Somerset, Ky.; four daughters and sons-in-law, Diana and Jim Steele of Mesquite, Texas, Brenda and Bruce Hiltz of Kenneth City, Fla.; Sue and Randy Bumgardner of Nancy, Ky.; and DeeDee and Scott McDowell of Hendersonville, N.C.; his sister, Jeanette Barnes of Fulton; seven grandchildren, Jim Steele Jr., Stacey Hiltz, Jason Hiltz, Bradley Hiltz, Bryant Johnson, James Johnson and Gary Johnson; and four great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Shirley Roberts; three grandchildren; three sisters, Wilma Rudicill and two who died in infancy; and his brother, Paul Roberts.
