The Union City girls turned in an admirable outing in their first match under the direction of new tennis coach Elizabeth Mooney on Tuesday at UT Martin.
The Lady Twisters finished a match short of knocking off reigning District 14A-AA champion Greenfield, which advanced to the State Tournament last year.
The Obion Countians’ fell by a 4-3 margin in what described as a “winter tennis outing” by Mooney.
Both Union City tennis teams are set to hit the court — in more suitable weather — on Thursday at home against Gibson County.
Top Lady Twister Anna Moore defeated Emily Allen 8-1, while Gracie Frankum recorded UC’s other singles win — a hard-fought 9-8 triumph (7-2 tiebreaker) over Kendal Cook.
The other Union City victory was in the doubles portion of Tuesday’s action as Moore and Frankum bested Allen and Kaylee Kesterson 8-6.
Meanwhile, Kesterson — the G’field four seed — and No. 2 seed Taylor Hatcher edged Tara Elam and Laura Reed Smith, respectively, by the same final of 8-6 in singles’ action.
In the battle of fifth seeds, Greenfield’s Lauren Rush bested Jenna Miller 8-5.
Hatcher and Cook also prevailed in doubles action as they downed the UC combination of Elam and Jenna Moore 8-3.
