Hello again from Dresden! The Department of Finance has been very busy with the release of the 2010 tax forms. For the 2010 calendar year, Weakley County employed 1,243 people and paid out over $24 million in payroll.

As of publication time, the Trustee’s Office has collected 87.26 percent   or $7,920,291 of the 2010 property taxes. These dollars are one of the main sources of revenue for county operations.

With eight months into the 2010-2011 fiscal year we are quickly approaching budget season. Our elected and appointed county officials will begin preparing their budgets for the next fiscal year.

In the next couple of months, our county commissioners will be reviewing these proposed budgets.  To keep informed of the budget process, you can check the county website, www.weakleycountytn.gov, to see the committee meeting schedules along with the minutes from each meeting.

The county website contains valuable information pertaining to all offices of Weakley County Government. You can follow the county commission meetings; pay your property taxes; search state-wide property records and find county and community events posted to the calendar section.

Should you have events you would like add to the county website, please follow the site links.

One reader sent a question regarding the status of the county’s debt and how we compare or rank with other counties. As of the last State of Tennessee Comptroller’s audit release, June 30, 2010, Weakley County owes approximately $20,500,223 in debt.

In comparison with the bordering counties, Weakley County’s debt is $4.7 to $7.2 million dollars less.

Please continue to email us with any questions or concerns you have about your county government to wctrustee@frontiernet.net or franciscos@k12tn.net.  This article was designed with you in mind so that all taxpayers can gain knowledge of how their money is being used; so keep those questions coming. Countdown to spring is less than 10 days!

Editor’s note: Shawn Francisco is the Weakley County Director of Finance. Marci Floyd serves as the Weakley County Trustee.
