Jackson State Community College will present an evening of music by world-class musicians at 6 p.m. on March 14 in Ayers Auditorium.
This free concert is sponsored by the school’s Spanish Club and Student Services department.
“Duo Guitiano” will feature artists from Columbia, Cuba, and Argentina performing Latin string guitar, piano, and violin solos, duets, and trios.
The featured performers are Carlos Castilla from Columbia, playing Spanish guitar, and his wife Amanda Virelles, who plays the piano.
Both started their artistic careers as soloists, finishing bachelor, master and doctoral degrees from important conservatories and universities in Cuba, Columbia, Russia and the United States.
This year’s concert also will feature a special guest violinist from Argentina who specializes in tango music.
Duo Guitiano’s repertoire includes music written for this media, from 19th century to the present day, including some of the greatest concert pieces of the most important guitar masters of all times. Along the way, they have rescued forgotten scores from the golden age of the guitar/piano duo, bringing to life again the tradition of this unique ensemble.
Admission is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided at intermission. Donations to the JSCC Foundation to benefit the Spanish Travel/Study Abroad Fund will be accepted.
