COVINGTON (AP) — The fatal shooting of an armed teenager who was later determined to be a suspect in the Henning post office killings has been found justified.
Haywood County Chief Deputy Mike Smothers killed 18-year-old Chastain Montgomery Jr. following a police chase on Feb. 14. A Tipton County grand jury’s assessment was that the shooting was justified.
The teenager’s father, Chastain Montgomery Sr., is charged with two counts of killing a government employee and other crimes in the Oct. 18 deaths of two U.S. Postal Service workers at the post office in Henning.
Authorities believe the father and son killed postal employees Paula Robinson and Judy Spray during a robbery.
