A stray cow was destroyed Tuesday afternoon after it wandered into a busy Union City shopping area and a heavily-traveled roadway.
Police received a complaint of a cow being in the parking lot of the JCPenney store on West Reelfoot Avenue about 2 p.m. Tuesday, according to a Union City Police Department report.
Police officers were en route when one officer advised the animal was heading west toward West Reelfoot Avenue. When officers arrived, the animal had just crossed the roadway ahead of them. It stopped on an embankment on the west side. Police reported traffic was heavy and it was raining heavily at the time.
According to the report, an officer got out of his patrol car just south of Kentucky Fried Chicken, where the cow was located, in an effort to keep it from trying to cross back over the highway. The animal started running east to cross West Reelfoot Avenue in heavy traffic and an officer fired one shot from his patrol shotgun, killing the cow.
The animal was removed from the scene after officers were unable to locate its owner.
