Financial advisor Randy Thetford has purchased the local Ameriprise Financial Services office in downtown Union City.
Thetford took over the local office from longtime colleague Fred Hancock, who has semi-retired from the firm.
Hancock began his local career as a financial advisor when he was appointed an advisor with Investors Diversified Services in August 1979. In 1984, American Express bought IDS.
In October 2005, American Express spun off a new corporation branded as Ameriprise Financial.
“Although the name has changed at different times over the 117-year history of the company, the commitment to comprehensive financial planning has been a trademark of the corporation,” Thetford said. “In early 2000, financial advisors were given the opportunity to become independent and Fred chose to go the independent route, as most across the country did.”
Today, Ameriprise Financial ranks as the oldest and largest comprehensive financial planning firm in the United States, according to Thetford. In addition, Ameriprise Financial is one of the largest asset managers in the country, with assets under management of more than $600 billion.
Hancock is still working on a part-time basis at the financial planning office, which is located at 227 South First St.
In addition to Hancock, Thetford’s team includes John Cooper and Beth Anne Clayton.
Cooper, who is a paraplanner, graduated in 2009 from the University of Tennessee at Martin with a major in finance. He began working at the firm in January 2009 as an intern.
Mrs. Clayton started with the firm as an assistant in August 2010. She is a Union City High School graduate and graduated from Freed-Hardeman University in Henderson in 2000 with a marketing major.
Thetford has gone from being an associate financial advisor under Hancock to being the new franchise owner of the local Ameriprise office. He is a certified public accountant and earned his accounting degree from UTM in 1983. He began his career as an internal auditor and accountant with Holiday Inns Inc. in Memphis, where he worked from 1983 until 1986.
Thetford worked as chief financial officer for E.W. James & Sons Inc. from 1986 until 2004, when he joined Ameriprise Financial Services.
He has been married to Anita Thetford for 26 years, has two daughters — Allison and Ashley — and attends and is a deacon at Exchange Street Church of Christ.
Thetford has been active in the community, having been a member and officer in the Union City Kiwanis Club, Union City Jaycees and Chimes for Charity organization.
He is also a graduate of Leadership Obion County.
The local Ameriprise office provides clients with comprehensive financial planning services, including investment advice and portfolio management.
The agency handles tax planning, estate planning, retirement planning and investment services.
“We deliver a diagnosis and prescribed plan of care for individuals and their families’ financial future,” Thetford said.
“We help answer the questions — Where do you want to go? Where are you now? And how do you get there?”
The telephone number for Ameriprise Financial Services is 885-2222.
