Skyhawk equestrians ride into final

MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin equestrian team defeated South Dakota State 11-3 in the first round of the inaugural Bulldog Invitational hosted by Georgia this weekend at the Equestrian Complex in Bishop, Ga.
The Skyhawks won the Hunter Seat 5-1 and swept the competition with a 6-2 victory in Western.
UT Martin won Equitation on the Flat 2-1. Senior Kelsy Abell, from Nindle, Va., won her point and claimed the MVP honors. Kara Bergenty also won her point.
The Skyhawks won Equitation over Fences 3-1. Freshman Tori Efrid, from Eads, won the MVP and Brittany Kasprack and Caroline Cramer also won their points.
The Skyhawks swept Horsemanship 4-0. Senior Stephanie Sanders won the MVP and Hannah Derks, Candice Fulcher and Michelle Chulock won their points.
UT Martin and South Dakota State tied, 2-2, in Reining. Fulcher and Derks both won points.
With the victory over South Dakota State, UT Martin advanced to the championship round against five-time national champion and host Georgia.
The host Bulldogs won the title by defeating the Skyhawks 14-0. Georgia won the Hunter Seat 8-0 and the Western competition 6-0.
