A new scam is being reported in the area, according to a local resident who says his daughter advertised an item for sale on Craig’s List online and received a check from a “customer.” The check was for considerably more than she had asked for the item that was being sold, but the purchaser contacted her and told her they had sent the wrong amount by mistake and instructed her to go ahead and deposit their check and send them the difference.
The check, of course, was fraudulent, but had she followed their directions, she not only would have been handing over her own money to them in the form of the requested “refund,” but the transaction had the potential to cause problems with her own bank account that could have resulted in fees.
Those selling items are urged to beware this latest scam.
