NASHVILLE (AP) — Ndidi Madu scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as eighth-seeded Florida beat ninth-seeded Arkansas 68-59 on Thursday in the first round of the Southeastern Conference tournament.
The Gators (18-13) were set to tip off against No. 4 Tennessee in the quarterfinals today at noon. The Lady Volunteers beat them twice during the regular season by an average 32.5 points.
Tennessee (28-2) capped off their ninth perfect run in SEC play in coach Pat Summitt’s 37 seasons, the league’s first since expanding to a 16-game schedule. Now they want their second straight tournament title, third in four years and 15th overall.
On Thursday, Florida and Arkansas (18-11) were tied at 59 points with 3 minutes left to play, but the Gators scored the final nine points of the game.
Arkansas’ Lyndsay Harris, who had a team-leading 18 points, left with 1:20 left after hitting the floor and injuring her right knee.
The Gators led by as many as 17 points and shot 60.7 percent in the first half, but the Lady Razorbacks hit 6 of 14 from 3 before halftime to erase the margin. The game featured eight ties and three lead changes.
